About Me, Megan

Hi! My name is Megan. I am a currently a senior in high school, and am a member of FFA, 4-H, Girl Scouts, National Honor Society, and MWA; I'm a pretty busy girl. I enjoy raising and showing beef cattle for FFA and 4-H and hope  to become a large animal veterinarian. I grew up in Pershing and have always found the rich history of the area fascinating, so for my final Girl Scout Project I chose to delve a little deeper into the history and create this website, so I can share everything I learned with the public. Most people haven't heard of Pershing, but it is a classic example of a little country community in the middle of nowhere, and there are tons of interesting stories that rarely leave the community members. So, I am here to share these little tidbits of information. I hope you have enjoyed learning about this little community as much as I have enjoyed researching and sharing the history of my home town.

My grandpa's farm has an interesting history, which is what got me more interested in the history of the rest of the community: Grandpa's farm was first sold by the government to Philip Tackett in 1825. The Tacketts bought only the high ground, not the river bottom. The bottom land was purchased from the government by George Bayer prior to 1840, however this purchase was not recorded until 1840. George Bayer was one of three purchasing agents for the Pennsylvania German Settlement Society. He bought the farm between 1836 and 1838 as a prospect for the town of Hermann or just prospect settlers. He bought 13,000 acres total in the Hermann, Pershing, and Richland areas. It was not recorded immediately because upon returning to Pennsylvania, he fell ill and was unable to make the land transfer. So, there are a lot of blank areas, but that is the very beginning of the story.

Note:

In Girl Scouts, there are three awards to earn: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. I have already earned both the Bronze and Silver Awards. This project is the third and final step to earning the highest award available in the Girl Scouts.
